On Monday, body camera footage was released by the Salt Lake City Police Department of an officer-involved shooting involving a 13-year-old boy who has Asperger’s syndrome.
The shooting happened almost two weeks ago and Linden Cameron, identified by his mother Golda Barton, remains hospitalized with multiple injuries. The boy suffered injuries to his shoulder, ankles, and stomach as a result of the shooting.
Barton told CNN that she called police for assistance with her son, who was suffering a “mental breakdown,” and bodycam footage showed her asking police to take him to a hospital while stating she cannot handle him on her own.
She informed officers that her son did have access to a BB gun or a prop weapon, but said she didn’t think he had a real gun. She also alerted them that her son has trigger issues about law enforcement, saying if he sees a badge, he thinks he’ll die. However, Officers responded that they needed to treat the situation as if he did have a gun.
The video footage showed officers chasing Cameron, who was slowly walking away, and screaming for him to get on the ground.
The officer then fired a series of 10 shots, as Cameron falls to the ground.
“I don’t feel good,” Cameron is heard saying. “Tell my mom I love her.”
“I am very saddened by this tragic situation,” Police Chief Mike Brown said during a press conference Monday. “As a father of three young sons, this has had a big impact on me personally,” Brown said. He did not give any details about the investigation.
An independent police investigation is being conducted, as well as investigations by a civilian review board and the Salt Lake City Police Department’s internal affairs department.
