Those looking for justice for former NFL running back Joe McKnight, who was shot during a deadly road rage incident on Thursday, are feeling quite concerned following a press conference held Friday afternoon.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand spoke to the community and members of the press on Friday, in which he says the alleged eye witness account was “factually incorrect.”
Normand says reports that Ronald Gasser stood over McKnight’s body and shot him are false. Instead, shell casings inside Gasser’s vehicle suggest Gasser fired three rounds at McKnight, who was “positioned at the passenger window,” from inside his car. Normand also says that despite news reports, there was no witness account of an apology being made by McKnight to Gasser and there’s no video of the incident.
“Any story other than the story you hear from me, the coroner, or the district attorney should not be believed,” Normand told the public, in regards to being mindful of what they read on social media.
According to Normand, details of the investigation will not be made public moving forward.
“We’re not going to reveal, at this point in time, any of the details of this investigation,” he said. “There are still witnesses that we are looking for. I do not want to be accused of tainting this investigation or suggesting a story about this investigation to witnesses that we have not located and talked to.”
Sheriff Normand also warned the public about protesting, saying that anyone who blocks the New Orleans Westbank Expressway will be arrested. Normand says that protests are understood and welcomed, as long as they are done peacefully and lawfully.
