Last week, Brooklyn-bred rapper Pop Smoke was shot and killed in what was initially described as a home invasion.
After further investigation, sources with surveillance footage said at least four masked men entered the home just minutes after the front doors were locked. Upon entry, two of the four men reportedly fired multiple shots, striking the up-and-coming rapper before fleeing on foot.
Pop Smoke was then rushed to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Since then, officials have not identified the suspects, nor have they determined if the incident was a targeted hit.
But in the meantime, the rapper’s family has released a statement, urging fans and media outlets for “respect and responsible reporting” during this time.
“The family of Bashar ‘Pop Smoke’ Jackson would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone for your support,” the statement read. “Every prayer, call, and act of kindness is deeply appreciated as we mourn the loss of our son, brother, and friend.”
“Brooklyn knew him as Bashar,” the statement continued. “He was educated and nurtured in Brooklyn, and his rise to fame all developed from the place he proudly represented. Within the last year, his extraordinary giftedness was revealed to the world, introducing Pop Smoke.”
“Unfortunately, there are no public details available regarding the murder of our loved one. We ask for respect and responsible reporting during this critical time. Inaccurate reports only add unnecessary pain to a grieving family.”
We continue to send our condolences to the family.
