The tragic incident occurred Friday afternoon in Jacksonville’s Westside when a 21-year-old man and his young cousin, Breon Allen, were leaving a home on Commonwealth Avenue around 5 p.m. They were on their way to the corner store when a vehicle pulled up and opened fire on the two.
Allen’s mother, Casheena Love, described him as a “very happy child” and a “superstar in football,” well-known throughout the city for his athletic achievements during his short life. She urged the community to “speak up” and provide any information to help her find justice for her son.
“I just need [people] to come forth with some names, some information, whatever you know because he was a baby, he didn’t ask for any of this,” she said.
Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan condemned the “heartless violence” in a statement, calling the shooting “senseless” and pledging support for Breon’s grieving family. Sheriff T.K. Waters expressed his outrage, stating, “Anyone who callously opens fire on a 7-year-old cannot be allowed to walk the streets of our city.”
Witnesses reported that two individuals exited a black vehicle, one carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and the other a handgun. The shooting left Allen dead and the man critically injured. Several homes were struck by gunfire, though no other injuries were reported. Several music outlets have identified the older cousin as a well-known local rapper by the name of MainTarget.
