Porsche has found a way to fuel cars without the use of gasoline or electricity.

For the first time, the German car company has filled its legendary 911 sports car with a synthetic fuel made of air and water.

Porsche was able to accomplish this with the help of a company called Highly Innovative Fuels. Porsche invested in the company with hopes of not being forced to go all-electric in the zero carbon future.

HIF produced the eFuel at a wind-powered plant in Punta Arenas, Chile. The company uses carbon from the atmosphere and hydrogen from water to create methane. This means the fuel is emission-free and works exactly like normal petrol.

The discovery could be groundbreaking, seeing as it allows hybrid cars to still run in the future without the owners needing to switch to electric.

“The potential of eFuels is huge. There are currently more than 1.3 billion vehicles with combustion engines worldwide,” Michael Steiner, director of research at Porsche, said. “Many of these will be on the roads for decades to come, and eFuels offer the owners of existing cars a nearly carbon-neutral alternative.”

Porsche will display the new project at the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup racing series. The eFuel currently costs $45 per gallon to make but will decrease to less tha $8 per gallon by 2026.
