As the announcement of a possible new show “Brown-ish” from Kenya Barris and Eva Longoria made headlines earlier this week, now comes word that the spinoff show is not as well-received as the creators had hoped.
Many of the reactions to the possible spinoff being in development have been anything but positive – just take a look at Twitter.
Much of the criticism stems from the idea that the Latinx community is not a monolith, which could make the spinoff’s title alone-problematic, while critics on Twitter have expressed that we don’t need any more Black-ish spinoffs.
Some critics have also questioned the involvement of Longoria, following her controversy last November in which she stated that Latinas were the “real heroines” of the election, a proclamation that seemed to be dismissive of the political power of Black women voters.
While Longoria did apologize and even clarified her statement, it doesn’t seem to be enough to change the minds of the show’s potential viewing audience.

Latinx is not a race, and posing a Latinx family as “brown” only contributes to “mestizaje” narratives that have systemically erased Indigenous, Black and Asian communities in the region. https://t.co/AdMq32mJ5Y
