A Florida teacher has been arrested for having an inappropriate relationship with a 15-year-old student. The teacher also revealed that she was expecting a child.
According to the Doral Police spokesperson, the teacher did not tell detectives how far along she is in the pregnancy or who the child’s father is.
On Thursday, Heiry Calvi, 41, was charged with lewd and lascivious battery; electronic transmission harmful to minors; unlawful use of a communications device; child neglect; offenses against students by authority figures; contributing to delinquency and possession of a firearm on school property.
After posting bond, she was released from Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on Saturday morning.
According to Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation records, Calvi’s bond charges totaled $39,000.
Since March, the charges against Calvi have been investigated by Doral police and the Miami-Dade School Board.
The investigation began when students told Miami-Dade Schools Police that a 15-year-old student showed around footage of himself and Calvi having sex. Doral Police became involved at that point and obtained permission to search the 15-year-olds phone. Images of the teen naked with Calvi and texts between the two expressing their love for one other were also obtained.
Calvi had previously taught the student at the John I. Smith K-8 enter, located on the same site as J.C. Bermudez High. “You should trust your children,” Doral Police spokesperson Rey Valdes said. “But as parents, you should always be cognizant of what they’re doing and who they’re hanging out with.”
The two had got close when Calvi started tutoring him at his house last year.
The school district released a statement on Calvi’s arrest: “Miami-Dade County Public Schools is disturbed by today’s arrest involving inappropriate employee behavior. When the District was apprised of these allegations in March, the employee was immediately reassigned to a non-school site location. The District will begin employment termination proceedings and will ensure the individual is prevented from seeking future employment with this school system. M-DCPS will continue to review its employee training to ensure that our workforce is fully aware of the District’s professional expectations of them and their ethical obligation to safeguard children.”
Calvi is the third Miami-Dade County teacher to be arrested for similar charges this month.
