A pregnant Georgia woman was shot in the stomach on Saturday by her Uber driver, forcing her to give birth prematurely, according to police.
The 36-year-old woman, who was seven months pregnant, suffered gunshot wounds to the stomach and leg. She was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where she delivered her baby girl.
The New York Post reports that both the woman and her newborn were listed in stable condition.
The victim’s father, Kenneth Anderson, told 11Alive that his daughter was at a friend’s house nearby and took the rideshare back to the College Park apartment complex.
He told the outlet his daughter got into an argument with the driver when she realized the car the man was driving did not match the vehicle’s description on the Uber app. The driver followed her out of the car at her destination and shot her three times: twice in the stomach and once in the leg.
“What made him jump out of the car and shoot her knowing she’s pregnant? Even if she wasn’t… it’s just still reeling through my head,” Anderson told the outlet.
Police are aware of the driver’s identity are working on apprehending him. Uber is cooperating in the investigation. The driver’s account was disabled as soon as Uber became aware of the shooting.
“The details surrounding the horrific act of violence towards the rider and her newborn are nauseating, and our thoughts are them as they recover,” Uber said in a statement. “We stand ready to assist law enforcement with their investigation.”
