A pregnant Illinois woman was run over in her driveway on Thursday trying to stop a carjacker who stole her car with her 2-year-old son still strapped into the backseat.
The woman had just returned to her Libertyville home when she brought one of her children inside the house. When she came back outside to get her son, a white BMW pulled into her driveway.
According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, a man hopped out of the passenger side of the BMW and tried to enter the woman’s Volkswagen Atlas. The suspect knocked the 34-year-old woman, who is six months pregnant, to the ground and stole her car with her child still inside.Â
Both of the vehicles exited the driveway, running over the woman and causing extensive injuries. Thankfully, the victim was able to call 911 and was transported to the hospital, where she was listed in serious but stable condition. She suffered a broken pelvis and broken elbow during the attack.
Then, an employee of one of the businesses on Lakeside Drive in Waukegan called 911 to report that the two vehicles had entered the parking lot and left a small child before feeling the lot. The person rescued the toddler before he wandered into a busy roadway.Â
The Volkswagen was later found abandoned in a parking lot. The sheriff’s office continues to look for the BMW, which was reported stolen from a dealership last week.Â
One of the suspects is described as a tall, thin male. He was wearing a gray zip-up hoodie and a light green COVID-style mask.Â
No arrests have been made, and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone that has seen the stolen BMW or has information about the carjacking to give them a call at (847) 377-4000 or CrimeStoppers at: www.lakecountycrimestoppers.orgÂ
