On Saturday, President Joe Biden shared the news via Twitter that his beloved family dog, Champ, passed away.

“Our family lost our loving companion Champ today,” Biden tweeted. “I will miss him.”

Champ was a 13-year-old German Shepard and was gifted by Biden to his wife, Jill Biden, after the 2008 election. They also adopted Champ’s sibling Major. Both became an instant hit among America following Biden’s November election win, which promised to bring pets back to the White House, the New York Post reported.

After the inauguration, the dog joined the family at the White House, but Major bit a security guard, sending both dogs back to their Delaware home. Then in March, a White House reporter discovered that one of them pooped on the White House floor.

Still, the Bidens had clear and expressed love for them.

Champ passed peacefully at their home, Biden added.

“He was our constant, cherished companion during the last 13 years and was adored by the entire Biden family,” the statement said. “Even as Champ’s strength waned in his last months, when we came into a room, he would immediately pull himself up, his tail always wagging, and nuzzle us for an ear scratch or a belly rub.”

“Wherever we were, he wanted to be, and everything was instantly better when he was next to us,” the statement attributed to the president and first lady said. “In our most joyful moments and in our most grief-stricken days, he was there with us, sensitive to our every unspoken feeling and emotion. We love our sweet, good boy, and will miss him always.”
