This week,Ā it was announcedĀ that President Joe Biden would be giving a speech during Morehouse College commencement and some people are expressing their disappointment in the decision.Ā
BidenĀ is scheduledĀ to appear before graduates on May 19th. However, some students and faculty members have expressed concern over him coming to speak to the class. Kendrick Brown, Morehouse College’s provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, stated in an email given toĀ NBC News that he would call a virtual meeting on Thursday “to extend an opportunity for faculty with different perspectives on the selection of our Commencement speaker to ask questions and make comments.” However, Brown also stated, āPlease know going into this conversation that the College does not plan to rescind its accepted invitation to President Biden.ā
People online have also expressed disdain for Biden speaking with graduates, mainly due to concerns that his visit could be politically motivated. As the 2024 presidential election nears, a bid for the Black vote has seemingly been a priority for politicians.Ā While there have been calls to protest, no campus organizations have announced concrete plans to do so. Still, it will be interesting to see how current and former students handle Biden’s presence.Ā Ā
