Wednesday, the US Coast Guard revealed “presumed human remains” have been recovered from within the wreckage of the Titan, the submersible that imploded last week on a voyage to view the sunken Titanic.
“United States medical professionals will conduct a formal analysis of presumed human remains that have been carefully recovered within the wreckage at the site of the incident,” the Coast Guard. said in a news release.
Also Wednesday, pieces of the mangled craft resembling parts of the Titan were hoisted up onto a Canadian pier. A remotely operated vehicle (ROV) owned by U.S.-based company, Pelagic Research Services, was used to thoroughly search the ocean floor for pieces of the submersible.
“I am grateful for the coordinated international and interagency support to recover and preserve this vital evidence at extreme offshore distances and depths,” MBI Chair Captain Jason Neubauer said. “The evidence will provide investigators from several international jurisdictions with critical insights into the cause of this tragedy. There is still a substantial amount of work to be done to understand the factors that led to the catastrophic loss of the Titan and help ensure a similar tragedy does not occur again.”
Last week, AP reported that the wreckage was found about 12,500 feet below the surface and roughly 1,600 feet from the site of the Titanic shipwreck.
