A member of the Proud Boys has pleaded guilty in connection with his role in the deadly Capitol riot, and in accordance with his plea deal, the New Yorker has committed to cooperating with the government.
On Wednesday, Matthew Greene pleaded guilty to a pair of charges in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The 34-year-old also agreed to cooperate with the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia under a plea agreement in which he admitted to conspiracy and obstruction of an official proceeding.
Greene must comply “fully, truthfully, completely, and forthrightly” with the office, as well as other federal, state, and local law enforcement authorities, according to the requirements of that component of the agreement. Prosecutors say such collaboration might include taking part in “covert law enforcement activity.”
According to the Associated Press, Greene is the first member of the Proud Boys to openly plead guilty to conspiring with fellow members to prevent Congress from certifying the 2020 election.
A prison sentence of up to five years might have been imposed on the conspiracy charge, while a penalty of up to 20 years could have been imposed on the obstruction charge alone. Prosecutors, according to CBS News, have already stated that they will likely recommend up to 51 months in prison. The date for sentencing has been scheduled for March of next year.
