What many people believe to be the highest distinction among Latin honors, Publix grocery store believes it’s incredibly inappropriate. So much so, that the grocery store refused to honor a South Carolina family’s request to celebrate the honor.
According to TMZ, a woman ordered a cake online to celebrate her son graduating from his homeschool program with a 4.79 GPA, which translates to a Summa Cum Laude honor. But, when a friend of the woman went to pick up the cake, she saw the word “Cum” was omitted.

“My son was humiliated! I seriously couldn’t make this crap up” the woman said on Facebook, revealing that the word was an apparent violation of the store’s obscenity policy. “How utterly ridiculous and I will be speaking to a manager for a refund. Shame on you Publix for turning an innocent Latin phrase into a total embarrassment for having to explain to my son and other (including my 70-year-old mother) about this joke of a cake.”
