Puerto Rico Governor Wanda Vazquez has signed an order declaring a state of emergency as she warns residents to prepare for Tropical Storm Dorian.
Dorian is bringing gusty winds and heavy rain as it approaches Puerto Rico on Wednesday, and weather forecasters expect the tropical storm to near hurricane strength as it gets closer.
“Hurricane Maria was a lesson for us and nearly two years after its devastating passage, today we can say that we are better prepared,” Vazquez said Monday.
In the wake of the news, Trump gave his two cents on the storm, tweeting, “Wow! Yet another big storm heading to Puerto Rico. Will it ever end? Congress approved 92 Billion Dollars for Puerto Rico last year, an all-time record of its kind for “anywhere.””
Forecasters predict Dorian’s path will take it near the eastern coast of the Dominican Republic and the western coast of Puerto Rico on Wednesday, before traveling northwestward through the Bahamas with an eventual strike on the Florida Peninsula Saturday night, according to AccuWeather.
Although Dorian is forecasted to remain a tropical storm as it makes its way through Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, the storm may near hurricane strength, and hurricane conditions cannot be ruled out.
As a result, the National Hurricane Center has issued a number of watches and warnings. Both Puerto Rico and parts of the Dominican Republic are under a hurricane watch, as of Tuesday.
