A GoFundMe page that was set up for Quaden Bayles, the young Australian boy whose heartbreaking video detailing his struggle with bullies, went viral, has raised nearly $500,000. Now, the family has announced that they will not be keeping any of the funds. Instead, all of it will go to charity.
Comedian Brad Williams was the one who initially established the account with the intent of raising enough funds to send the child and his family to Disneyland. He made the decision after seeing the video of young Quaden telling his mother he wanted to commit suicide to escape the painful bullying he endured due to his dwarfism. However, as the video continued to circulate, donations came in swarms. Soon the crowdfunding efforts had swelled to an epic $473,962.
Now, the Bayle family is looking to donate the proceeds to organizations that could assist others with Quaden’s disorder and assist those who may be feeling suicidal. The family also decided to pass on the trip to Disneyland as well.
Quaden’s aunt spoke with Australia’s NITV News about the family’s decision to donate the money.
“What kid wouldn’t want to go to Disneyland, especially if you have lived Quaden’s life. To escape to anywhere that is fun that doesn’t remind him of his day to day challenges. But my sister said, ‘you know what, let’s get back to the real issue.’ This little fella has been bullied. How many suicides, black or white, in our society have happened due to bullying?” She continued, “We want the money to go to community organizations that really need it. They know what the money should be spent on, So as much as we want to go to Disneyland, I think our community would far off benefit from that,” she said.
The family chose Dwarfism Awareness Australia and Balunu Healing Foundation to receive the hefty donation.
“We need to come together and work out how to make sure young people like Quaden don’t have to deal with what they have been dealing with.” Ms. Bayles declared.
After Quaden’s video made its way online, many speculated that he was not 9-years-old as the family stated, but instead a full adult man who was posing as a child for financial gain. His family quickly refuted those claims.
