A New York City man stabbed his girlfriend to death while high on drugs and called 911 to report a fake robbery, authorities said Wednesday.
Peter Ikonomou, 37, fatally stabbed Mindy Singer, 35, with a sword in his Queens home. He then stuffed her body into a closet.
His mother showed up to check on him after not hearing from him in a while, and Ikonomou appeared to be under the influence of drugs. Ikonomou slammed the door in his mother’s face and ran onto the balcony, where he started screaming that he had killed someone.
According to police, his mother tried to get inside, so Ikonomou called 911 and reported that “fake cops and locksmiths” were trying to break into his apartment.
When cops arrived at the apartment on 85th Road in Briarwood, Ikonomou met them with a stick in his hand and told them Singer was “in the closet.” They located her body, which still had a 46-inch sword sticking out of her back. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police sources told the New York Daily News that the couple had no previous domestic incidents. Ikonomou did have a pretty long rap sheet, including seven arrests for drug possession and driving while on drugs.
The outlet reports he struggled with police as they put him in the police car. Ikonomou had no shirt on, no shoes on, and kicked the window in the squad car until it broke. According to a neighbor who lives nearby, he was screaming that “he was having a heart attack.”
He was charged with murder, manslaughter, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon.
Tributes immediately began pouring in on social media for Singer. Her aunt, Debra Levine, wrote that the family was “devastated” over her death.
“My heart is broken and my family and I will never recover from this nightmare,” she wrote on Facebook. “Words cannot do this outrageous tragedy justice.”
