Quinta Brunson has added to Black excellence by becoming the first Black woman to receive three comedyĀ Emmy nominations in the same year.
She has also made Emmy history with her three nominations with āAbbott Elementary,ā for outstanding comedy series, lead actress in a comedy, and writing for a comedy series.
Brunson, 32, is also the youngest Black woman ever nominated in the acting category, Variety reported.
The inclusion of Black creatives has progressed over time, but thereās still a long way to go.
Despite the past two Emmy awards delivering two comedy series with Black producers recognized (2021 with āBlack-ishā and āCobra Kaiā and 2020 with āInsecureā and āWhat We Do in the Shadowsā), there has been only one Black person who has won the Emmysā top comedy category ever ā Winifred Hervey for āThe Golden Girlsā in 1987.
āAbbott Elementaryā is among the eight nominated shows in the category and would be the first broadcast network show to take home the award in the category since āModern Familyā in 2014.
The 74th Emmys will air on Sept. 12.
