Quinta Brunson Becomes Second Black Woman To Win an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series

Quinta Brunson is the second black woman after Lena Waithe to win the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for the first season of her show and the first to win solo.

Abbott Elementary is an ABC sitcom mockumentary-styled, developed, written, and starred by Brunson. The ensemble cast comprises Tyler James Williams, Janelle James, Lisa Ann Walter, Chris Perfetti, and Sheryl Lee Ralph.

It is the second Emmy win for Abbott Elementary after Sheryl Lee Ralph won in the Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category. Ralph thanked Brunson for contacting her about the role and giving her the opportunity and “golden ticket” to win.
Later during her speech, Brunson thanked ABC, Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros.
She said, “It takes many people to make a television show. I need to say thank you to Justin and Patrick, my co-showrunners, for believing in a story from four years ago.”
She also thanked her mentor, Larry Wilmore, “for teaching me to write television as well as he did.”
As the executive producer of Abbott Elementary, Brunson was nominated twice more this year for Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
