R.Kelly’s career might have fallen, but the singer’s album sales and streams have reached a new high following his guilty verdict.
Typically someone with Kelly’s history would not have a successful career anymore. However, the plot twist is that Kelly’s album sales have increased by 517% since the September 27th guilty verdict.
During the week after hearing his fate, the producer’s music doubled in streams and tripled in sales. From September 27-October 3rd, the disgraced singer’s streams catapult from 11.2 million to 13.4 million.
Now even though the courts’ decision set off the increase of sales, Kelly’s music was already getting a good amount of playtime in 2021. In fact, Kelly songs were bringing in around 5.4 million on-demand audio streams per week in 2017. Today, he is averaging approximately 6.5 million.
Though it may seem that everyone is still enjoying his music, YouTube chose otherwise. Earlier this week, the video streaming app removed accounts belonging to the singer. Unfortunately, no other music app followed suit, and his music remains available for listening.
R.Kelly was convicted on a slew of sex trafficking charges and will be sentenced on May 4, 2022.
