R. Kelly is looking to get out of prison by any means necessary. The disgraced singer has hired Bill Cosby’s attorney to help him appeal his sexual assault conviction.
On Friday, Jennifer Bonjean filed paperwork in the U.S. District Court in Brooklyn to be a part of Kelly’s appeal team. She will lead efforts to secure Kelly a new trial or appeal and has asked the court for a 60-day extension for post-trial motions.
Bonjean was thrust into the spotlight when she led the legal team that successfully got comedian and actor Bill Cosby’s sex-abuse conviction appealed in June. Bonjean plans to do the same with Kelly and says she’s “looking forward to getting familiar with the record.”
The “Bump N Grind” singer was found guilty of racketeering and eight counts of sex trafficking charges in Brooklyn federal court last month stemming from nearly three decades of rape allegations. He is scheduled to be sentenced on May 4th, 2022. However, even if Bonjean can secure an appeal, the 54-year-old faces similar sex abuse charges in Minnesota and Illinois.
