R. Kelly’s legal team is urgently seeking his release from prison, claiming the singer’s life is at risk due to a government-orchestrated murder plot.
In a motion filed June 10th in Chicago, Kelly’s lawyers appealed directly to Donald Trump for help, alleging a high-level conspiracy within the federal prison system. The team claims authorities stole private legal correspondence and manipulated a former girlfriend into testifying against the artist.
Even more alarming, Kelly’s attorneys say federal officials tried to recruit Aryan Brotherhood gang leader Mikeal Glenn Stine to kill the incarcerated singer. In a sworn statement, the terminally ill inmate said he was promised freedom in exchange for the murder, but instead warned Kelly of the setup.
“R. Kelly’s life is now threatened because of his willingness to fight and to expose the very kind of corruption that President Trump has been fighting and standing up to since the day he took that office,” Kelly’s attorney, Beau Brindley, said during a press conference.
Brindley emphasized they’re bypassing traditional clemency channels, pursuing a direct pardon from Trump.
“We are seeking a conversation with the president, because R. Kelly does not have the time, with his life in danger, to go through the normal channels,” he said. “We are seeking talks with the White House. We are seeking talks with everybody who is willing to help us.”
Kelly is serving a 30-year sentence for sex trafficking in New York and faces another 20 years for child pornography and enticement charges from a separate trial in Chicago.
