R. Kelly’s lawyer, Jennifer Bonjean, is pushing the Supreme Court to throw out the disgraced singer’s sex crime convictions.
Bonjean argues that the 2003 implementation date of the PROTECT Act means that Kelly’s actions from the previous decade shouldn’t be subject to its provisions.
The PROTECT Act, signed into law by then-President George W. Bush, removed statutes of limitations for child abduction and abuse cases.
Kelly, currently in prison serving a 20-year sentence, was convicted in September 2022 of producing child pornography and enticing a minor to engage in sexual activity.
This followed his 2021 New York conviction on racketeering charges, including sexual exploitation of children and forced labor, for which he received a 30-year sentence.
