KaMillion, the multi-talented rapper and actress best known for her role as Mia Knight in HBO’s “Rap Sh!t,” isn’t just making waves on the TV screen; she also has a pen game that’s undeniable. Recently, the artist took a moment to remind fans of her impressive songwriting abilities, and it’s safe to say that she’s can credited with being responsible for some of our favorite hits.
Last week, KaMillion proudly shared that she has written for some big-name celebrities but explained why she decided to leave that path alone. In an Instagram post, KaMillion noticed that she wasn’t included as a composer on Trey Songz’s “Already Taken” track. She playfully highlighted that she was “left off of bad & bougie” but became more serious about why she chose to shift her focus to herself instead of writing for other artists.
“This is the reason I stopped writing for artist and focused on my own artistry because if you don’t pop your shi and tell your story, people will try to write you out of history & your contributions,” she wrote in the caption. “I wrote 95 percent of these lyrics and my pen nor photo is anywhere here smh. People gon have to respect my shoes when I step. No more will I hide from the bricks i laid. I’ve really put in work in this industry. Y’all not gon play with me any more. Im not playin with me either.”
In another post, KaMillion shared that she also wrote “Rather Be” by H.E.R. She explained that while on FaceTime with the singer, she was able to write the song as H.E.R. played the melody. Additionally, KaMillion shared a snippet of her vocals on the song that she recorded for reference in her home studio.
“Wrote this on facetime while H.E.R. played the melody on the piano,” she added. “The second slide is my vocal reference I recorded at my home studio after we got off the phone. The rest is herstory! This album won a Grammy. Poppin my sh!t cause who gon do it if I don’t.”
KaMillion finished off her point with a final post of Rihanna’s “Watch n’ Learn” track. According to the rapper, she co-wrote on the song, alongside Muni Long. She ended the posts stating that she wanted to take a moment to celebrate herself and reminded her followers to believe in themselves.
“I co[wrote] on Watch n Learn by Rih Rih! Muni Long & I lent our writes on this beautiful song. I’m such a RihNavy girl! Just celebrating my accomplishments,” KaMillion continued. “I really had to come from behind the curtain lol. I really had to remember who I am and what I’ve accomplished in my career. Time to give myself my flowers and the world will follow! Stop sleeping on yourself is my message!”
Nonetheless, KaMillion’s decision to showcase her accolades was met by major support from her fans. Many praised her for making such a bold move to celebrate herself, while others was left in shock, not knowing that she was behind some of the world’s beloved hit. One user commented,”I didn’t know you write. This makes me like you even more girl” and another adding, “Wow, I still listen to this and never knew. Pop your shi sis.”
