As of May 7, 2025, travelers 18 and older will need to show REAL ID-compliant identification to pass through TSA security for domestic flights in the United States. If you’re planning to fly this summer, not having the right ID could mean being turned away at the airport.
The REAL ID Act, passed in 2005, set higher security standards for state-issued IDs and driver’s licenses based on recommendations from the 9/11 Commission. After multiple delays, the enforcement deadline is officially here.
What Qualifies as REAL ID-Compliant Identification?
Here are the most commonly accepted forms of REAL ID-compliant ID:
REAL ID driver’s license or state ID (marked with a star)
U.S. passport or passport card
Permanent resident card (green card)
Foreign passport
U.S. Department of Defense ID
Federally recognized, tribal-issued photo ID
Employment authorization card (Form I-766)
Other TSA-accepted forms of identification
What If You Don’t Have a REAL ID?
If you don’t have a REAL ID by the deadline, you can still fly, but only if you bring an alternative TSA-approved document, such as a valid U.S. passport or passport card. These will still be accepted for domestic flights.
However, without a REAL ID or alternative ID, you will not be allowed through airport security checkpoints, and you could miss your flight.
How to Get a REAL ID
To apply, book an appointment at your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) as soon as possible. You’ll need to bring:
Proof of legal name and date of birth (e.g., birth certificate or passport)
Social Security number (e.g., Social Security card or tax form)
Two documents showing state residency (e.g., utility bill, lease)
Proof of lawful status in the U.S.
Some states are reporting longer DMV wait times due to last-minute demand. Illinois, for example, added 2,500 extra appointments a day and opened a Real ID “supercenter” to help accommodate requests.
Don’t Wait
Many state officials are warning that procrastinators could face long lines and delays. Airports like LAX and Denver International have already begun posting signs and sending reminders.
If you plan to fly this spring or summer, check your ID now. If it’s not compliant—or you don’t have a passport—make an appointment soon. Otherwise, you may be left grounded.
