Efforts to give Donald Trump a third term in the White House are now underway.
Republican Rep. Andy Ogles from Tennessee introduced a resolution Thursday to amend the U.S. Constitution, allowing Trump — and any future president — to serve three terms. Ogles argued that Trump “has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness,” and emphasized the need for “every resource necessary” to correct the course set by the Biden administration.
Ogles is proposing an amendment to the 22nd Amendment, which limits presidents to two terms. He aims to change the language to allow a president to be elected “more than two times.” This move comes three days after Trump was sworn in for a second, non-consecutive term.
Trump has openly hinted at his willingness to serve more than two terms, and some of his allies, like journalist Geraldo Rivera, have speculated that discussions around amending the 22nd Amendment would intensify. However, there are alternative paths for Trump to stay in power, including running for vice president or having a family member assume the presidency while he makes the decisions.
