Republican senator Josh Hawley is introducing a new bill that would allow states to deport undocumented migrants.
On Tuesday, Missouri Senator Josh Hawley called for the United States to “take the gloves off” and fight against allowing people from different countries to enter the country illegally as part of a new bill he’s pushing called “Empowering States to Deport Illegal Immigrants Act.”
The bill would give state’s local and state-level law enforcement the power to enforce certain federal immigration laws. Hawley’s bill comes as more republicans accused the Biden Administration of refusing to secure the border.
On top of being a direct shot at the 2012 Supreme Court case that limited the authority states have over immigration law enforcement, it would also give state prosecutors the ability to move forward with prosecuting individuals through their own state resources. In addition, the bill would allow bordering states the ability to secure the border and deport migrants who aren’t documented.
