Research done by Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative shows that 10.6 percent of the directors of the top 2019 movies are women.⠀⠀⠀
According to the report, this percentage marks the highest number in the category in 13 years.
Dr. Smith makes sure to mention in her research that this is the first time there’s a noticeable shift in hiring practices for women.
Dr. Smith includes in her research that four women of color directed one of the top 100 movies in 2019, which shows a decrease in the percentage of women of color in the field.
According to Dr. Smith’s research, the underrepresented director’s stat for 2019 was 16.8 percent compared to 21.4 percent in 2018.
“While 2019 is a banner year for women, we will not be able to say there is true change until all women have access and opportunity to work at this level,” Dr. Smith said.
