Reverend Al Sharpton has voiced strong support for Costco after the company made a resolute decision to uphold its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, despite growing pushback from other corporations rolling back similar efforts.

In a climate where many businesses are retreating from DEI policies amid political pressures and financial concerns, Costco is standing firm in its commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace. Sharpton, a prominent civil rights leader, praised Costco for its dedication to diversity, noting that such measures are crucial for building a fairer and more just society.
“We will stand with those that stand with us. Costco immediately stepped out and said that they will not back on DEI,” Sharpton stated during a rally in front of Costco. “I announced that for 90 days we’re going to research the company that we find that has made the most affront. We will call a boycott. But today, we are calling a buy-in. I have bought 100 people $25 gift certificates. We’re going shopping at Costco.”
While several major companies, including tech giant Meta, have scaled back or abandoned DEI programs in response to political pushback or financial uncertainty, Costco’s steadfast stance has positioned it as a leader in the corporate world on this issue. Sharpton’s endorsement of the retailer comes at a time when the debate over the role of DEI in business continues to intensify.
“We will not pay to be rejected and disrespected,” he added to his supporters.
