Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is intensifying his controversial claims about the MMR vaccine, inaccurately stating it contains “aborted fetus debris” during a NewsNation town hall on April 30th.
While discussing the ongoing measles outbreak, now totaling 935 cases across 30 states and three deaths, Kennedy asserted, “There are populations in our country like the Mennonites in Texas who are most afflicted, and they have religious objections to the vaccination because the MMR vaccine contains a lot of aborted fetus debris and DNA particles.”
His remarks have drawn swift backlash from medical experts. “The claim that the MMR vaccine contains ‘fetal debris’ is not only scientifically inaccurate, it’s dangerously misleading,” said Dr. Tyler Evans. “There is no actual fetal tissue in the vaccine.” Dr. Shira Doron added, “It is not true that the vaccines have fetal elements, debris, cells in them…but what is true is that the viruses that need to be grown to create vaccines are grown in cells. In some cases, human cells.” Doron emphasized the MMR is “by far among the safest.”
Despite CDC guidance reaffirming vaccination as the most effective protection, Kennedy is pushing alternative therapies. “Secretary Kennedy will be enlisting the entire agency… to treat a host of diseases, including measles, with single or multiple existing drugs in combination with vitamins,” an HHS spokesperson stated.
Kennedy’s continued promotion of “freedom of choice” over established science is stoking mistrust, as public health officials work to curb the outbreak.
