In a call made to 911 before Richard Sherman‘s Wednesday arrest, a woman identified as his wife, Ashley Sherman, shared that the NFL free agent threatened to harm himself.
Sherman was arrested on a burglary domestic violence charge in Seattle on Wednesday and was denied bail.
A Redmond, Washington, police spokesperson said that following a confrontation, Sherman was arrested, and police used a K-9 to apprehend him. On Tuesday night, Sherman was also involved in a single-car accident.
According to the audio of the 911 call, Ashley Sherman said that Sherman was “being aggressive” while wrestling with an uncle who was at home.
“He’s threatening to kill himself,” Ashley Sherman said. “He has sent text messages to people saying he’s going to hang himself. And he’s saying that if the police show up — please don’t shoot, is what I’m asking … He said that if the police show up, he’ll try to fight them.”
Ashley Sherman and the operator had multiple heated exchanges during the call, including when she stated that she needed police on the scene right away.
The operator responded, “Listen to me, I’m handling this. You need to stop telling me that.”
According to police, no one was hurt, but Sherman suffered minor injuries to his leg and ankle, while one officer had minor scrapes to his leg.
