What started as a personal situation reportedly spiraled into violence, leaving Rickey Thenarse fighting to recover after being shot in Los Angeles.
The former Nebraska standout and brief NFL player was shot in the stomach in South Los Angeles on Friday, according to reports. He was rushed into emergency surgery and, thankfully, is expected to be okay after receiving prompt medical attention.
While details are still unfolding, sources say the shooting may be tied to a tense love triangle involving Thenarse, his girlfriend, and the father of her child. That situation, which had reportedly been building, appears to have reached a breaking point just days before the incident.
Law enforcement sources say two individuals, described as a man and a woman, were seen fleeing the scene in a black SUV shortly after the shooting. No arrests have been made so far, and detectives are actively investigating what led up to the gunfire.
Thenarse built his name as a four-star recruit before playing at Nebraska from 2006 to 2010, appearing in 51 games and earning special teams MVP honors early in his career. He later signed with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 2011, appearing in three preseason games before being released.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine exactly how a personal dispute turned violent.
