This year’s 51st NAACP Image Awards are sure to be a topic of discussion, seeing as though Rihanna’s public appearance drought will officially come to an end. The Bajan superstar will be making an appearance to receive a distinguished award at the event.
Tuesday, the National Association for Advancement of Colored People publicized that Rihanna would be honored with the President Award’s at the ceremony in Pasadena, CA.
Other greats who’ve received the award include Muhammad Ali, Rev. Jesse Jackson, and her mentor, Jay-Z.
The megastar is being honored by the prestigious establishment for her “groundbreaking career as an artist and musician, but someone who has also distinguished herself as a stellar public servant.”
Rihanna received 9 Grammy awards prior to launching her sultry lingerie line, Savage x Fenty in 2018, her new clothing line, Fenty, which was inaugurated last year, and her makeup & beauty line, Fenty Beauty, which debuted in 2017. She is also responsible for her roles in films like, “Battleship & Amazon’s “Guava Island.”
“From her business achievements through Fenty, to her tremendous record as an activist and philanthropist, Rihanna epitomizes the type of character, grace, and devotion to justice that we seek to highlight in our President’s Award,” said Derrick Johnson, President and CEO of the NAACP.
The show will be televised for the first time this year on BET. It airs February 22nd, two days after Rihanna’s birthday.
