Russell Simmons speaks about the courts using rap lyrics as evidence in Young Thug and Gunna’s RICO case.
Friday, Russ went live on Instagram to share his thoughts on Young Thug and Gunna’s case. In his 11-minute rant, Russ compares Caucasian experiences in entertainment to Thug and Gunna’s.
He explains how Run DMC didn’t separate themselves from their rough-around-the-edges friends once they gained fame. Instead, Russ says that DMC brought their friends along with them to join the music industry.
“We dragged some of the people out of the hood who were in very scary situations and got them in the music business. Their families today are doing very well, and they’re doing well. Their lives were enhanced, and their lives were saved by Run DMC,” Russ said.
Russ calls what is being done to the rappers racist since it wasn’t done to Caucasian entertainers.
“Just like if you snatch Robert Dinero because he was hanging out with the gangsters or Frank Sinatra. Frank Sinatra played a gangster, and Robert Dinero played many gangsters. What are you gonna do? Lock him up because of the people he grew up with.”
“Kid grew up on the block and became mob dudes on tv. They’re not in jail like Young Thug. This is f*cking ridiculous what they’re doing to rappers in racism. You didn’t do it to Dinero. You didn’t do it to all the guys in the Sopranos, you didn’t do it, Frank Sinatra,” he continued.
He ends his video by giving a message to the black community to stop accepting the injustice that’s being done.
“I think our community should stop acting as they accept it. We keep acting like we accept so much sh*t. It’s unbelievable.”
