The grandfather who accidentally dropped his 18-month-old granddaughter to her death while onboard a cruise ship has been sentenced to three years of probation.
Salvatore Anello pleaded guilty after his granddaughter fell from Royal Caribbean‘s Freedom of the Seas in 2019.
The ship was docked in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Anello played with her when she fell through an open window that he thought was closed.
Chloe fell 115 to her death onto the concrete below.
A statement by the government said Anello “negligently held a minor out an 11th-floor window.”
Now Anello will serve his probation in his home state of Michigan. He and his family are now focusing on a civil suit against Royal Caribbean.
Anello said in a statement Monday, “After this sentencing, I feel a mixture of anger and relief. Relief that I will serve no jail time and that I did not have to admit any facts. Relief for my family so that we can close this chapter and move on together.”
