Sanya Richards-Ross Opens Up About Her Decision to Have an Abortion Before Competing in Beijing Olympics [Video]

Olympic gold medalist Sanya Richards-Ross opened up about her decision to get an abortion in 2008 in light of the Roe v. Wade reversal.

“I’m Sanya Richards-Ross, four-time Olympic gold medalist, and in 2008, I had an abortion because I wasn’t ready to be a mom. I was still passionately chasing my childhood dreams,” the athlete said on YouTube series, “Uncomfortable Conversations with Emmanuel Acho.

The 27-minute video shares the perspective of four women, including the Olympian- now turned Real Housewife of Atlanta, along with M.J. Acosta-Ruiz, Dr. Yeni Abraham, and Pastor Chelsea Smith.

Ross revealed she had an abortion in 2008, the day before she jetted off to Beijing for the Olympic Games. And the Olympian didn’t tell her father until before her book, Chasing Grace: What the Quarter Mile Has Taught Me About God and Life, was released. She remembered the conversation with her father was much easier than anticipated.

“From the age of nine, the one sole dream that always felt very real to me was becoming an Olympic champion.” She adds, “For me, when I found out I was pregnant, right before I left for Beijing, I felt like I was in an impossible situation because I knew I was with my forever. ”

She was with her soon-to-be husband, Aaron Ross, and wanted to have a family with him, but she also wanted to be an Olympic champion, which was in reach as she was heading to Beijing to compete.

Ross says, “The day before I left for Beijing, I had an abortion.”

“And as a woman who also identifies as a Christian woman, who tries to be Christlike, I never ever thought that I would be in that situation.”

Ross is the newest addition to The Real Housewives of Atlanta this season, along with Marlo Hampton coming on as a full-time housewife, Drew Sidora, Kandi Burruss, Shereé Whitfield, and Kenya Moore.

This season, Ross and her husband conflict with compromising on expanding their family. As Aaron wants another child, Sanya believes her one son is enough and wants to focus on expanding her business empire and the family Limo business.

Ross adds, “It was, it still is really hard for me talk about it, but I am grateful however that I had the choice,” when talking about her divorce with Acho.

The Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade on June 24, 2022, after it was decided on January 22, 1973, that women had the fundamental right to seek an abortion. With abortion off the table, the world looks at scarier times and other possible reversals. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas concluded in his arguments that same-sex marriage rights and contraception should be revisited.

A petition to impeach Clarence Thomas has reached over 1.2 million signatures.
