Saweetie has had enough of the “nepo baby” narrative and took to social media to set the record straight. The rapper shared her frustrations with the assumption that her success is due to family connections rather than her own hard work.
“I hate the ‘nepo baby’ narrative,” Saweetie began. “It spits in the face of the child who grew up barely spending time with her parents because they were too busy hustling trying to make ends meet.”
Addressing her college experience, Saweetie pointed out that if she were truly privileged, her “wealthy family” would have paid for her tuition and boarding so she could enjoy the social aspects of college. Instead, she worked four jobs to support herself.
“Saying I’m privileged ignores the girl who risked her safety renting rooms off of Craigslist because she believed in herself enough to stay in an expensive city while everyone else was telling her to move home because that’s the safe and better ‘financial option,'” she continued.
Despite the financial struggles, Saweetie found creative ways to pursue her dreams. “Can’t pay for studio time? No problem. I made car rap videos which is how I got discovered,” she revealed.
Saweetie expressed pride in her accomplishments and vowed to continue sharing her story to inspire others. “I’m proud of all the hard work I’ve done/accomplished and will continue to share my story to inspire those who come after me.”
By highlighting her journey, Saweetie aims to dispel the notion that her success was handed to her and underscore the dedication and perseverance it took to get where she is today.
