Sean Kingston’s mother, Janice Turner, is officially headed to federal prison. A Miami judge handed down a five-year sentence plus three years of probation after Turner was convicted alongside her son in a wire fraud and theft scheme involving over $1 million in luxury goods.
The 62-year-old was emotional in court, telling the judge, “I’m sorry. My intention was to keep my son afloat in this difficult industry.” She claimed the music world took advantage of Kingston, and her only goal was to support him. But the court wasn’t moved.
Turner’s legal team had pushed for a lighter 30-month sentence, arguing that her health problems and limited criminal past didn’t justify such a lengthy punishment. They submitted character letters highlighting her role as a “pillar” in the community and asked the court to allow her to serve time close to Miami so family could visit.
Court documents revealed that Turner and her son executed a well-planned scheme to swindle luxury car dealers, jewelers, and high-end vendors. Using fake wire transfers and phony payment confirmations, they walked away with more than a million dollars in goods without ever paying a dime.
A restitution hearing is set for October to determine how much the victims might get back. Until then, Turner is preparing to serve her time.
