Senator Mitch McConnell Falls Twice at Capitol, Renewing Concerns About His Health

Republican Senator Mitch McConnell is reportedly “fine” after falling twice at the Capitol on Wednesday, according to his office.

The 82-year-old first slipped on stairs near the Senate chamber and later fell again during the Republican conference lunch. Following the incidents, he was seen in a wheelchair as a “purely a precautionary measure,” a spokesperson said.

“Senator McConnell is fine. The lingering effects of polio in his left leg will not disrupt his regular schedule of work,” the spokesperson added.

This marks another health-related incident for the former Senate leader, who has faced scrutiny over his ability to serve. In December, he fell and sprained his wrist. In 2023, he froze twice in front of reporters, raising concerns about his cognitive health. That same year, he suffered a concussion and broke a rib after another fall.

Despite these challenges, McConnell continues to work. On Tuesday, he praised support for Ukraine as the Senate advanced a $95 billion aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan.

McConnell, who led Senate Republicans from 2007 to 2024, stepped down as party leader at the end of last year. He remains the longest-serving party leader in Senate history.

His repeated health incidents have sparked discussions among lawmakers about his fitness to serve, though his office maintains he will continue his duties without disruption.
