Serena Williams says that marriage can be “bliss” but that you have to put in work.
As we all know, relationships are complex. Beautiful, but they all take work. In a new Bumble Q&A interview, Williams, 39, opened up about her marriage to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.
The tennis star said that she and Ohanian’s marriage is incredible, but there are times that they both have to work at it. “Marriage is not bliss, but it can be if you work at it,” she said. “I learned that love is an amazing feeling, and if you have an opportunity to feel it, then it’s a special thing. That’s been a lot of fun.”
For Williams, loyalty is her biggest requirement. “A dealbreaker for me in a relationship is definitely loyalty,” she said. “Well, not having it, that is.”
Williams and Ohanian have been married since 2017. Back then, Williams touched on the importance of loyalty for her. She added that heartbreak is a part of reality but said everything could be resolved with time. “Heartbreak is a part of life, whether it be a loved one, a boyfriend, or an animal,” she said. “But time heals all wounds.”
According to Yahoo! News, being present is the most important thing to Ohanian. “I think if you were to ask my wife or many other people in relationships, it’s often the simpler things that are the most important. You have to show up,” he said in 2019 during an interview with Glamour. “You have to be supportive. These are the things that matter.”
