Serena Williams will be playing at Wimbledon. The All England Club broke the news on Tuesday that the tennis star was awarded a wild-card entry for singles, marking her return to Grand Slam action after being away for a year.
The holder of 23 Grand Slam singles trophies, Serena will tune up by playing doubles at a smaller grass-court event first, teaming with Ons Jabeur at Eastbourne, England, starting next week, the Associated Press confirmed.
Main-draw play at Wimbledon is scheduled to start on June 27.
Williams has not competed anywhere since she was injured in the first set of her match during the All England Club last year.
Williams was among a half-dozen other women that earned a spot in the singles draw on Tuesday, along with five British players: Katie Boulter, Jodie Burrage, Sonay Kartal, Yuriko Miyazaki, and Katie Swan.
Two other women will also get invitations “in due course,” the All England Club announced.
Williams seemed to confirm the news with a social media post 2with a photo of her white shoes on what appears to be a grass court and the message: “SW and SW19. It’s a date. 2022. See you there. Let’s Go.”
The 40-year-old star has won seven singles trophies at Wimbledon, the first in 2002 and the most recent in 2016. Williams was the runner-up there in 2018 and 2019.
