On Friday, Serena Williams thanked her family in a tearful interview after losing in the third round of the U.S. Open.
On Friday, Serena went head to head with her opponent, Ajla Tomljanović, in the U.S. Open Tennis match. Tomljanović took the lead in the first set, 7-5. However, in the second set, Serena redeemed herself with a 7-6 (7-4) comeback.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough, and Serena lost 6-1 to Tomljanović in the third.
During her final post-game interview, Serena gave a tearful shoutout to her parents for their leadership and the support they gave to her career.
“Thank you so much, you guys were amazing today. I wish I played a little bit better. Thank you, daddy. I know you’re watching. Thanks, mom,” Serena said on the court. “I just thank everyone that’s here, that’s been on my side so many years, decades. Oh my gosh, literally decades. But it all started with my parents, and they deserve everything, so I’m really grateful for them.”
She also thanked her sister, saying, “These are happy tears, I guess! I don’t know. And I wouldn’t be Serena if there wasn’t Venus, so thank you, Venus.”
To close out her interview, Serena seemingly hinted at possibly returning back to the sport in the future.
“I don’t think so, but you never know, I don’t know,” she said.
Throughout her career, Serena has been coined one of the most influential tennis players to ever live. The tennis player finished her career with seven Australian Open victories and seven Wimbledon titles. In addition, Serena also racked up six U.S. Open wins and three French Open wins.
