New footage has surfaced showing ex-NFL player Sergio Brown tussling with officers on a plane as they tried to extradite him to the United States to face charges for his mother’s murder.
On Sunday, immigration officers in Mexico City were onboard the flight with Brown. The plan was to transport him to Tijuana, where he would then be picked up and taken back to the States. However, things didn’t go as planned, and Brown fought with his escorts. In a cell phone video captured by passenger Michelle Williams, he shoves the officers and screams that they are abducting him.
“They’re kidnapping me… I’m from Chicago. I should not be going to Tijuana,” he yelled out.
Brown began swinging at one of the officers, accusing the men of “criminal confinement.” He told one passenger, who identified herself as a doctor, that his name was “Sinthio.” As she tried to calm him down, Brown continued to struggle with the men. Several times, he threatened to get off the plane, even once saying he’d “walk home.” At no point during the ordeal was Brown handcuffed. After an hour and a half of yelling, Brown was finally escorted off the plane. He was eventually transported to Tijuana, where he was formally arrested and taken to San Diego. The 35-year-old will now remain there until he is returned to Illinois.
Brown was reported missing in September when his mother, 73-year-old Myrtle Brown, was found dead in a creek behind her Maywood home, which she shared with her son. Though police have not revealed exactly what happened to Myrtle, they did rule her death a homicide, resulting from several injuries on her body. A neighbor told authorities that Brown acted erratically in the months before his mother died. He was captured on Ring camera shortly before her body was found burning what appeared to be her clothing. As police searched for Brown, he surfaced in Mexico, even posting on Instagram, disputing that his mother was dead altogether.
With him now in custody, more details will likely be revealed in the coming weeks.
