Rapper Shaggy explains the real meaning behind his hit 2000s track “It Wasn’t Me.”
The 54-year-old Jamaican rapper recently spoke with PEOPLE at his much-anticipated tour featuring En Vogue, Sean Kingston and TLC. While interviewing with the outlet, Shaggy revealed the song was greatly misunderstood by many and is not glorifying cheating.
“It was a big misconception with that song because that song is not a cheating song. It’s an anti-cheating song,” he said. “It’s just that nobody listened to the record to the end.”
He continued, “There’s a part in the record where it’s a conversation between two people and you have one guy, which is me at that point, giving that bad advice, like, ‘Yo, bro, how could you get caught? Just tell her, ‘It wasn’t me’, and then at the end, the guy says, ‘I’m going to tell her that I’m sorry for the pain that I’ve caused.”
Additionally, Shaggy says fans understanding of the song is “completely lost” and doesn’t make sense.
“‘I’ve been listening to your reasoning, it makes no sense at all. Going to tell her that I’m sorry for the pain that I’ve caused. You might think that you’re a player, but you’re completely lost’.”
Nevertheless, Shaggy has proven to not be a player as he’s been married to Rebecca Parker for ten years and welcomed three daughters together. He also has two sons from a previous relationship.
