Shannen Doherty, beloved actress and star of the iconic series Beverly Hills, 90210, has passed away at the age of 53 after a long and courageous fight against cancer. PEOPLE confirmed the news with a heartfelt statement from Doherty’s longtime publicist, Leslie Sloane.
“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease,” Sloane shared exclusively with PEOPLE on Sunday, July 14.
Doherty, who was surrounded by her family and her cherished dog, Bowie, is remembered as a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. Sloane added, “The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace.”
First diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, Doherty faced her health challenges with remarkable resilience. In a candid interview with PEOPLE, she reflected on her journey, saying, “I definitely have days where I say, ‘Why me?’ And then I go, well, ‘Why not me? Who else? Who else besides me deserves this?’ None of us do.”
Despite a period of remission, Doherty’s cancer returned in 2017. Throughout her battle, she remained a symbol of strength and inspiration to many.
Shannen Doherty rose to fame as Brenda Walsh on Beverly Hills, 90210, which premiered in October 1990. Her portrayal of Brenda made her a household name, and she left a lasting impact on fans and colleagues alike when she departed the show after its fourth season in 1994.
