After the Dallas Cowboys lost to the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Wild Card game, there were speculations that there would be a lot of changes in Dallas. However, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones did the opposite and decided to retain head coach Mike McCarthy and quarterback Dak Prescott. Currently, it is the time of year when the NFL owners’ meetings take place, providing Jerry with another opportunity to shape the narrative around America’s most popular football team. In doing so, he reaffirmed his faith in Dak Prescott, leaving the media with a quote.
“I think there are a handful or more of quarterbacks playing who haven’t won a Super Bowl that will win a Super Bowl,” Jones told the media during the Owners’ meeting. “I think Dak is one of them. I’m firm there. He’s one of the ones who can.”
Shannon Sharpe, on First Take, reminded Jerry that it is cool that he is publicly supporting his quarterback. However, you have to show us your level of commitment through the contract extension he receives.
“In a relationship, a guy can tell a young lady in a relationship, ‘I love you I love you,’ but until he puts a ring on it do you really love her?… Dak is saying ‘Jerry you keep saying you believe that I can bring you a championship, you believe in me… The way you show loyalty to an employee, to tell them you believe in them is money and tenure. So give me four or five years. Give me $25 million a year. A $100 million guaranteed, that’ll show me you believe in me. Otherwise, you just talking, we just dating! As a matter of fact, he hasn’t even given Dak a key to the apartment.
Sharpe is right; the organization has to fully back Prescott with its actions, not just its words.
