Shedeur Sanders has finally secured an NFL spot after a turbulent draft journey. Selected by the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round (No. 166 overall), Sanders’ path to the pros was marked by a surprising slide, with multiple quarterback-needy teams passing on him.

His selection came despite sharp criticism from anonymous NFL sources earlier in the week, calling him “entitled” and “not very good” in pre-draft assessments. These remarks stirred significant backlash within the league.
Despite this, it’s unclear if the comments directly impacted his draft position. A former GM, who had scouted Sanders in 2023 and 2024, noted that the slide “felt personal,” as Sanders was overlooked by teams with pressing quarterback needs, including the Browns, New York Giants, Las Vegas Raiders, New Orleans Saints, and Pittsburgh Steelers. After the first three rounds, five quarterbacks were chosen ahead of him: Miami’s Cam Ward, Mississippi’s Jaxson Dart, Louisville’s Tyler Shough, Alabama’s Jalen Milroe, and Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel.
Now, Sanders will join the Browns’ quarterback room, which includes Gabriel, Joe Flacco, and Kenny Pickett, ending a tense draft experience and setting the stage for his professional career.
