Shirley Raines, the heart and hands behind the nonprofit Beauty 2 The Streetz, has died at age 58. Raines passed away on January 28, after being found unresponsive at her home in Henderson, Nevada. Her death was confirmed by her organization. No foul play is suspected, and an autopsy is pending.
Known to thousands as Ms. Shirley, Raines built a movement rooted in dignity, presence, and care. Through Beauty 2 The Streetz, she provided food, clothing, hygiene supplies, and personal care services to people experiencing homelessness, most visibly on Los Angeles’ Skid Row. Haircuts, makeup, and grooming were not extras in her work. They were central. Raines believed looking in the mirror and seeing yourself cared for could be life-changing.
Her outreach gained national attention through social media, where videos of her work reached millions. In those moments, she addressed the people she served as “kings” and “queens,” a practice that became a signature of her approach. The message was consistent: everyone deserves respect, no matter their circumstances.

Raines’ impact was formally recognized when she was named CNN Hero of the Year in 2021, a moment that helped expand her nonprofit’s reach and resources. Still, those closest to her say her greatest pride came from the relationships she built week after week on the streets.
Born and raised in Compton, California, Raines was also a mother of six. Her life was shaped by personal loss, which she openly shared as part of her motivation to show up for others with urgency and love.
