A Georgia man is accused of fraudulently marrying Shirley Strawberry, co-host of Steve Harvey’s radio show, and using her fame to defraud over 25 victims out of more than $750,000.
Earnest Williams, 57, known as “Nesto,” was indicted by a Fulton County Grand Jury on April 23 on 39 counts of fraud, according to court documents. The indictment states that from December 1, 2009, through June 30, 2022, Williams engaged in racketeering activities in Georgia and other states.
Williams posed as a successful businessman, allegedly stealing from victims, primarily women, by promising assistance with business ventures, brand promotion, and image building. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis described him as a con artist who manipulated victims through false promises and romantic relationships.
Williams’ marriage to Shirley Strawberry in January 2015 played a crucial role in his schemes. Documents allege he entered the marriage fraudulently, using Strawberry’s celebrity status to lend credibility to his scams. Willis revealed that Strawberry was unaware of Williams’ deceit, including the fact that he was already married to someone else.
Williams reportedly recruited co-conspirators, including Erica King, also known as Ericka Hughley or Ericka Hughley Rothschild, who impersonated attorneys to deceive law enforcement and the courts. King, 46, is listed as a co-conspirator in 19 of the 39 indictments against Williams.
Williams faces serious charges under the Georgia Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization Act. Court records show that his public defender, Shawn Hoover, filed a plea agreement for Williams on April 26. A hearing for the plea agreement was scheduled, but the court has not listed a decision.
Five of Williams’ fraud counts exceed $24,999 in value, carrying a potential two to 20-year sentence. Another 10 counts involve amounts under $25,000, with a possible one to 10-year sentence. Williams is currently held at the Cobb County jail, awaiting his next court appearance, which has not been set.
