Shonda Rhimes, Gabrielle Union and Jada Pinkett-Smith Team Up For New Broadway Show About Systematic Racism Titled “American Son”

Shonda Rhimes, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade are teaming up as co-producers for a Broadway show about systematic racism.

The Broadway drama entitled “American Son” will star Kerry Washington and #StevenPasquale, and Washington will also act as a producer under her company Simpson Street. Other producers are Jeffrey Richards, Rebecca Gold, and Will Trice. The script was written by Christopher Demos-Brown and will be directed by Tony-winner Kenny Leon (A Raisin in the Sun). The story is about two estranged parents who come together after their son’s empty car is found during a traffic stop in Florida. The cast also includes Eugene Lee and Jeremy Jordan.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

“Christopher Demos-Brown has written a play that dives deep into the big questions of who we are as a nation,” said Washington, “by exploring the intimate relationships within a family caught at the crossroads of love, loss, identity, and community. After reading the script I was immediately enthralled by the world of the play and the gripping circumstances that these characters are facing.”

”American Son” premieres on Saturday, Oct. 6 at the Booth Theatre, with an opening night of Sunday, Nov. 4. The show will go on for 16 weeks and will end on Jan. 27.
